Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Woody Allen comedy with Kenneth Branagh as a newly-divorced
writer searching for fame, fortune and perfect love. Also with Judy Davis, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Winona Ryder.
SEX/NUDITY 7 - Lots of sexual innuendo. Kissing, often passionately; in one
scene we see two women kiss briefly. A woman unbuckles a man's belt and oral sex is
implied, but nothing is seen. We see a man underneath covers and a scantily clad woman
getting dressed -- they've obviously just had intercourse. A man and woman dance very
suggestively. A man touches a woman's elbow and she begins to moan pleasurably. Two
women practice performing fellatio on bananas. A man and woman are clothed but appear to
be having intercourse on a desk. During one scene, we see a clothed couple in the
background rolling around on a bed and another naked couple kissing in a hot tub (we see
their bare shoulders only). Two men discuss having group sex while two women sit next to
each other on a bed; later, we see one couple moving and moaning underneath the covers and
the other couple lying next to them, just talking. Lots of scantily-clad women.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man accidentally drives his car through a showroom
window (no one is injured). Fake blood runs from the palms of a statue of Jesus Christ. A
man breaks lamps and throws things around a room; he also pins a woman down on a bed,
shaking and threatening her. We briefly see a professional boxing match.

PROFANITY 9 - About 50 F-words, many anatomical references, a couple
scatological references, and many mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Fame, betrayal, sexual relationships, finding happiness and
satisfaction.
MESSAGE - Some people will never be content with their lives and loves; they
think there's always something or someone better.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
