Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Chris Rock stars as the leader of a rap band, in this
parody of what it really takes to make it as a rapper. The band's lyrics and actions are
an exaggerated version of controversial rap groups like NWA.
SEX/NUDITY 6 - There are two explicit sex scenes in which we clearly see a
topless woman, as well as flashes of the rest of her unclothed body. One scene shows
characters licking various parts of their partner's body (oral sex is suggested). During a
rendition of the band's hit song, brown balloons symbolizing a part of the male anatomy,
fall from the ceiling.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - There's a brief car chase, accompanied by gun fire between
the two cars. Two fist fights (without blood) and one character has a heart attack and
dies when he's threatened with a gun. At the dead man's open casket funeral, a man punches
his corpse.

PROFANITY 9 - Every profanity imaginable is here: at least 30 utterances of
the F-word, plus assorted anatomical references, scatological language and insults. The
issue of dirty song lyrics is one of the film's themes. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Pre-marital sex, drug-dealing, women treated as sex-objects.
MESSAGE - Be yourself; don't hide behind a facade.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
