ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Al Pacino and Sean Penn star in this familiar gangster tale
about a bad guy who tries to make good but whose past keeps catching up to him. Also with
Penelope Ann Miller.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - More nudity than sex, thanks to a scene in a strip-bar, with
bare breasts and female derrieres shown several times. One implied sex scene in which we
see the woman nude, but we do not see the actual act.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Countless numbers of dead bodies, primarily from gun
shots. In one scene, a young man has his throat slit and in another, particularly chilling
scene, a man is beaten to death with a boat oar while he screams for mercy. There are two
major shoot outs, the last one includes graphic blood and gore.
PROFANITY 7 - The F-word is used numerous times as well as an abundance of
scatological and anatomical references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Drug abuse, gangster mentality, betrayal, theft, murder.
MESSAGE - You must make a clean break in order to start over. You cannot put
honor above reason. Your past always catches up to you.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
