ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Robert De Niro's directorial debut, about a teenager's
struggle between the hard but honest life of his father and the seductive life of power
and money represented by the local gangster.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Two men are shot in the head, and a lot of blood is shown.
There's a bar fight where motorcycle bikers are beaten by gangsters with baseball bats and
bottles. There are kids selling guns on the street. A group of black kids enter a white
neighborhood and are beaten badly with sticks; there is a lot of blood. While travelling
to the black neighborhood with gasoline-filled bottles, a car explodes and the white kids
all burn to death: there are some very gruesome close-ups of burned flesh and limbs.
PROFANITY 9 - Every possible derivation of the F-word is used throughout the
movie. A smattering of scatological terms, and racial references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Race relations, gambling, the corrupting influence of easy
money and power.
MESSAGE - The saddest thing is wasted talent; the best thing is to give and
get love unconditionally. The choices that you make will shape your life forever.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
