ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Remake of George Cukor's funny 1950 pic of the same name,
about a dumb blonde who proves she has an active brain, after all. Melanie Griffith is the
blonde, John Goodman plays her wealthy, boorish boyfriend and Don Johnson is a book-smart
journalist hired to smarten her up.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - The opening scene scans up a couple of very long and shapely
legs to Griffith's face. There is a lot of cleavage shown in Griffith's various outfits,
tight evening gowns and work-out suits. Three big kisses between Griffith and Johnson.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Goodman has a very short fuse, so he yells a lot, and
threatens people with physical violence; he ends up hitting Griffith twice, in the face.
PROFANITY 3 - Some name-calling and verbal threats. Also, about 8
profanities, mostly of the scatological variety and some mild cursing. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Tax loopholes. Bribing government officials.
MESSAGE - Fight your own battles. Learning is the path to true happiness,
while only really dumb people think money is the answer. It's important to know how to ask
questions. Washington politicians are basically for sale.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
