ASSIGNED NUMBERS

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

MPAA Rating: R

A young man (Mark Wahlberg) becomes a big star in the porn film industry. With Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore and Heather Graham.

SEX/NUDITY 9 - Full female frontal nudity. We also see her bare buttocks and she then gets on top of a man as another man watches; it's assumed they have sex (although the actual act is not seen). A large penis is seen for several seconds. A man sees his wife and another man having sex, with thrusting and moaning, and we see her bare breasts. A group of people watch a couple having sex with explicit thrusting, in an extended scene. During a filmed sex scene we see thrusting, lots of moaning and deep kissing (including between men and between women). There are several other sex scenes: A filmed scene has a man licking a woman's nipple; a couple have sex off screen (we can't see anything but we hear it); a montage of women's bare breasts and implied oral sex (we see women's heads moving). In another scene of implied oral sex (we see a woman unzip a man's pants and kneel down). A man reaches into his underwear and feels himself and in a later scene masturbates. Lots of sexual innuendo including references to oral sex, homosexuality, anal sex and explicit instructions during the filming of porn scenes.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A man slams a woman against a wall. A woman has a severe nose bleed and a man's mouth is bloody after being hit. A man slaps another man and a man slaps a woman in a film. Fight scenes in a film. A man shoots two people dead but we don't see the actual shooting. When a man commits suicide blood sprays on a wall. A man is kicked and punched by two people (including being stomped by skates) and his face is very bloody. A group beat up a man and kick him in the face with some blood. A gunfight with some people being shot and very bloody; a man has blood and brains all over him. Other people are shot and killed. A woman has blood on her thighs from childbirth.

PROFANITY 10 - About 150 F-words, many scatological references, many anatomical references, many mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Pornography, the '70s and '80s, casual sex, fame, drugs.

MESSAGE - Pride goeth before a fall.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
