Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

MPAA Rating: R

In this Bacchanalian show-and-tell, a group of twenty-something singles explores and reveals (both verbally and physically) the ups and downs of love, lust, drinking and recreational sex in the 90s. With Sean Patrick Flanery, Jerry O'Connell, Amanda Peet, Tara Reid, Ron Livingston, Emily Procter, Brad Rowe and Sybil Temchen. [1:42]

SEX/NUDITY 10 - Lots and lots and lots of sexual innuendo about everything from how to have sex to multiple-partner sex to S&M. A man rapes a woman from the back; we see several shots her breasts (see also Violence/Gore below). A man and woman passionately kiss, she takes off his pants (we see his buttocks) and performs fellatio on him, and then they have sex on the hood of a car. A woman handcuffs a man to a bed, whips him, and it's implied she's putting either her finger or a strap-on dildo into his anus. We see a front shot of a fully naked man, including his genitals. We see a naked woman straddling a naked man as they have sex (we repeatedly see her breasts). We see lots of shots of a woman's breasts as she and a man are kissing passionately, getting ready to have sex. We see a moaning, naked woman having sex on a computer screen (we see her breasts and buttocks). We see two scenes with shots of a man's bare buttocks. We see a naked woman on the cover of what looks to be a video game box. There are several shots of large plastic penises that move (women are taking a "how to perform fellatio" class). A man puts his hand up a woman's shirt. A man and a woman passionately kiss and they rub each other's genitals (clothes still on). One clothed man playfully humps another man from the back, suggesting anal sex. We see a man with his head buried in a woman's cleavage, kissing it. We see a couple shots of men in their underwear; one man has an obviously erect penis. We see a couple passionately kiss while dancing. Discussion of breasts implants.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - We see a disturbing scene where a man rapes a woman from behind and knocks her head into the bed's headboard (she's obviously frightened and in pain). We see a fight in which two men get very bloody beating each other up -- there's lots of tackling, punching, kicking, and one man repeatedly slams another against the hood of a car. A woman whips a man during sex. A woman punches a man in the face. Two men wrestle in a bar. A woman and a man vomit. A man urinates on the street in two scenes. A woman falls and cuts her face.

PROFANITY 10 - About 70 F-words, many anatomical and scatological references, numerous mild obscenities, many insults. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Recreational sex, drinking, date rape, S&M, lying, finding love.

MESSAGE - When looking for love we often find casual sex instead, but sometimes we end up hating the consequences of our actions (especially after lots of drinking).

Our Ratings Explained

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
