ASSIGNED NUMBERS

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

SEX/NUDITY 2 - Some sexual innuendo. A man scratches his crotch and then rubs salve down his pants; in a later scene he sniffs his hand.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A man is shot, falls off a building, lands on a car roof and dies; also, a man falls off a building onto a concrete floor with broken glass on it. Several people are shot -- two are fatally wounded -- in the chest and hand; some blood is visible. A man is shot at while dangling from a rope; he gets stuck when he tries to climb down the rope. Threatening with guns; gunfire is exchanged in a couple of scenes (one scene involves a robber and a convenience store owner, and we see bags and glass explode around them). During a foot chase, a man runs into a clothesline and is nearly strangled. Twice (one time played for laughs), a man smashes another's head against glass and chokes him. A fistfight, a man is beaten up (we see him later with black eyes and a bruised face), a man's head is slammed into a steering wheel (his face gets a little bloody), a man's head is smashed into a desk, a man is hit in the nose, a man is kicked in the face, a man is jabbed in the kidneys. We see a corpse with blood dripping from his eye; a man has blood on his bandaged hand. A truck rolls over and explodes after a flare is shot into it; the driver has cuts and blood on his face. A few car chases; a man is hit by a car when he runs out into traffic. Some explosions and a glass door is broken.

PROFANITY 6 - Two F-words and one mouthed F-word, many anatomical references, scatological references and mild obscenities and a racial slur. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Law enforcement, imposters, thieves.

MESSAGE - Be true to yourself.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
