Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.
Based on the book by Bruce Porter, this biopic follows the
ups and downs in the life of drug czar George Jung (Johnny Depp), who made millions on
cocaine in the 70s but was sentenced to prison in the 80s (until 2025) for drug
trafficking. Also with Penelope Cruz, Franka Potente, Rachel Griffiths, Ray Liotta, Paul
Reubens, Jordi Molla, Max Perlich, Cliff Curtis and Ethan Suplee. [2:00]
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Sexual innuendo, including references to genitalia, oral sex,
and homosexuality. Passionate kissing. In one extended scene, a man and woman do drugs,
engage in passionate kissing and sensual touching (including buttocks squeezing), and then
have S&M sex (while we don't see any frontal nudity or thrusting, we do see the woman
dressed as a dominatrix and we see her with a whip). We see the bare breasts of two women
posing for a photo. We see a woman's bare back and shoulders. We see a woman in her bra
and panties sitting on a man's lap with her arms around him. A woman straddles a man while
they're in a car. We see several women in bikinis. A man grows phallic-looking marijuana
plants.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Several instances of threatening with guns and several
shots fired with a few people dying. A man puts a gun in another man's mouth and threatens
to kill him. A man points a gun
at another's head (this occurs in a few scenes). A man is
shot and killed at point blank range; we see blood squirt out all over the wall behind him
and watch him die. We watch people drag a corpse across the ground. A man is shot in the
chest and we see blood gush out of the wound onto his shirt. A man is beaten with the butt
of a rifle and then kicked several times. We see a man with bruises and scars all over his
face (from being beaten). A woman slaps a man; a man slaps a woman. A woman has a bloody
nose from doing too much cocaine. We see a woman having a baby; she's in pain with her
legs spread and we see blood on her inner thighs. A man passes out from doing too much
cocaine. A woman dies of cancer off screen. Lots of drug use.

PROFANITY 10 - About 110 F-words, several anatomical and scatological
references, several mild obscenities, insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Drugs, drug smuggling, murder, family, wealth, success,
marriage, deception, friendship, prison, death. Several slang references to genitalia.
MESSAGE - Drug dealing can be a lucrative way to make a living, but personal
sacrifices must be made just ask George Jung.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
