ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Madeleine Stowe is a violin player who's recently regained
her sight and has visions of a murderer's face. Aidan Quinn helps, and romances her, as a
smart-mouthed detective.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - There are several sex scenes between Quinn and Stowe, which
are not visually explicit but quite audible (with groans and moans). There are two shots
of male derrieres, one of which is Quinn's. A woman is shown lying in a bathtub, and she
is fully exposed from the waist up. There are also several shots of a topless Stowe.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - There is a graphic scene of eye surgery. A flashback to a
young girl's bloody face after being smashed into a mirror. Several gruesome scenes of
victims who are raped and murdered, and shown with their wrists slashed. A police officer
is killed and he's shown with his bloody head hanging out of a car. And a violent shoot
out, with one person shot off-screen.
PROFANITY 7 - The F-word is used a couple of dozen times along with assorted
scatological terms, anatomical and sexual references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Abusive parents, rape, murder, injured pets.
MESSAGE - Seeing isn't necessary believing.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
