Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.
Adam Sandler adopts a friend's illegitimate child to
prove to his girlfriend that he's a responsible adult. With Joey Lauren Adams, Steve
Buscemi, Deborah S. Craig, Leslie Mann, Josh Mostel, Rob Schneider, Cole Sprouse, Dylan
Sprouse, Jon Stewart and Kristy Swanson. [1:31]
SEX/NUDITY 3 - Numerous instances of sexual innuendo (in one scene, men
admire male movie stars' bodies) and a few kisses (one is between men). Many breast
jokes and references to Hooters restaurants. We see several cleavage-revealing tops, some
scantily clad food servers and a woman in a bra while getting dressed. We see a "Live
Nudes" neon sign several times.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - Mostly played for laughs. Twice, a man and boy place a
stick in front of inline skaters, who then trip and fall (one hits a rock and tumbles into
a lake). A man intentionally runs in front of a car and rolls on top of the hood and a man
rolls down a hill in a shopping cart, hits a pole and falls onto the ground (neither are
injured). We see lots of dead pigeons on the ground, and it's implied that a boy has
killed them with a slingshot. While men are wrestling, a man becomes unconscious after
being put in a "sleeper" hold; the other man pats his crotch to wake him up. A
man hits his head on a bench, a boy hits a man's leg with a stick and a woman hits a
man's head with some lanterns. A few verbal threats; in one scene, a man forces
another to give non-candy items to a young trick-or-treater. A boy urinates in public
several times (sometimes we see the stream) and we see large wet spots when he urinates on
his bed and on a man's shirt while he's carrying him; we also see several men
standing in front of urinals. After eating lots of candy, a boy vomits (we see chunks of
food in the puddle of vomit); twice, a boy lets a glob of saliva hang out of his mouth and
then sucks it back in.

PROFANITY 5 - Lots of anatomical references, scatological references and
mild obscenities, some name-calling and a few profane finger gestures. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Parenting, parent-child relationships, lack of ambition, love
relationships, lying, responsibility, homosexuality, homeless people, Hooters restaurants.
MESSAGE - Being a parent is a difficult job and it forces you to grow up.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
