Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.
Martin Lawrence is a detective who must protect a mother
and child, but the only way he can do so is to go undercover as a large, overbearing
Southern grandma known as "Big Momma." Also with Nia Long, Paul Giamatti,
Terrence Dashon Howard and Eric Arthur Linden. [1:30]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Several instances of sexual innuendo (including references to
oral sex and masturbation) and a couple of kisses. Through a window we see silhouettes of
two people who appear to be having intercourse (oral sex is also implied), but they really
aren't involved in anything sexual. A woman and a man dressed as a woman are in bed
together holding each other (there are two erection jokes/references). A man tries to kiss
a woman and then tries to grab her breasts. A man and woman kiss in bed (he's on top of
her with his shirt off; but no other nudity is visible). We see a naked woman's side and
backside as she undresses and gets into a shower, and we see a naked man in bed with a
sheet covering his genitals. We see several shots of a pregnant woman in labor with her
legs spread, but only her bare inner thighs are visible.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - Mostly played for laughs. A man is shot in the shoulder
(blood is visible around the wound) and a man is shot in the back (no blood is visible). A
woman punches a man's crotch, a boy punches a man's face, a man punches another's face and
groin, a man head butts another, a man and woman exchange kicks and punches several times,
a man is kicked in the face a few times and his hair is pulled, a man kicks a man through
a window (we see blood on the man's cheek), a woman elbows a man in the gut and then flips
him, a man flips a woman over his shoulder and kicks her, a boy elbows another boy and
knocks him to the ground, and a man slaps a woman's backside. A dog growls and looks like
it's going to attack a man but doesn't. Threatening with guns. We see a man getting ready
to be shot on a TV screen, and then the camera pulls away and we hear shots fired
off-screen. We see a woman on a toilet passing gas; also, lots of scatological humor.

PROFANITY 5 - One F-word derivative (in lyrics), many anatomical references,
lots of scatological references, many mild obscenities, and several insults. [profanity glossary]
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
