ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito and Peter Facinelli
are three lubricant salesmen who meet at their company's hospitality suite at a
Wichita sales convention to await the arrival of an important potential client. [1:30]
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Several instances of sexual innuendo (including references to
sodomy and masturbation). A man asks another if he's a homosexual, a man describes (in
non-graphic terms) his appreciation of a beautiful woman, and a man reads a Penthouse
magazine (we don't see the cover, and the pages he's reading are text only).
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A man pushes another onto a table and then they briefly
scuffle on the floor. During a temper tantrum a man beats his arms and legs against couch
cushions. In a dream, a man sitting on a presumably high balcony leans forward and falls
off (we don't see the results of the fall).
PROFANITY 6 - About 10 F-words, many anatomical references, several
scatological references, lots of mild obscenities, a few insults, and some name-calling. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sales conventions, salesmen, friendship, religious faith,
honesty, character, sincerity, divorce, failure.
MESSAGE - We're all trying to sell something, and those who are truly honest
acknowledge instead of hide their agenda.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
