An American woman (Patricia Arquette) travels to Burma and
finds herself in the midst of the Burmese civil war.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - A woman finds her husband and child dead with pools of
blood around their dead bodies (this scene is shown twice). A military takeover results in
mob scenes with yelling and running. There are scenes of rioting and explosions. Several
people are shot and killed while trying to run away and a hospital is shown full of people
with bloody wounds. Two men are shown being shot. A hanging corpse is shown. A woman is
threatened by a soldier and he attempts to rape her. A woman cuts a bullet out of her
friend's shoulder and we watch this in bloody close-up.
PROFANITY 2 - One scatological term, a couple of mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Military dictatorships, martial law and rioting, foreign
travel.
MESSAGE - The greatest good you can do for yourself is to help others.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
