ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson are parents with a family
falling apart when their son is accused of murder.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - There's some passionate kissing. A photo of a nude girl from
the waist up with her arms crossed over her breasts (but her nipples can be seen). One sex
scene without nudity: A man and woman kiss, he pulls up her skirt and lays down between
her legs.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A girl's dead body, with bloody arms and a bloody,
disfigured face is shown. A rock is thrown through a window. There's a scuffle (one man is
armed with a knife). A man burns his arm (the burned arm is shown later). A fight between
a man and woman has them pushing and yelling; she almost hits him with a crowbar. A woman
falls onto a tire jack and we see a pool of blood ooze from under her head.
PROFANITY 5 - One F-word, a few scatological references, some mild
obscenities, a couple of anatomical references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Murder, the legal system, destroying evidence, teenage
relationships.
MESSAGE - You should put your principles above your family.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
