ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

A cold-hearted cynic (Jack Nicholson) learns to warm up,
with a little help from a lonely waitress (Helen Hunt) and a battered gay neighbor (Greg
Kinnear).
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A woman is shown from behind wearing only a towel around her
waist. Her breasts are briefly glimpsed from the side. Several nude drawings of a woman
are shown. As a male street hustler gets undressed, a glimpse of his bare backside is
shown.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - There is an intense scene in which a gay man is brutally
beaten by three thugs. He is later shown with severe facial scars, a swollen-shut eye and
bruises, and spends the rest of the film in a cast, briefly confined to a wheelchair, and
then walking on crutches. A man shoves a little dog down a garbage chute.
PROFANITY 6 - A couple of
F-words, several scatological references, several
anatomical references, several racial and sexual slurs, several mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mental illness (Obsessive-Compulsive disorder), bigotry,
homosexuality, prostitution.
MESSAGE - Learn to love and others will love you in return.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
