ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Ray Liotta leads in this "Catch 22" wannabe, set
in a VA hospital known more for its red tape than for its health care, where doctors have
to adopt an underground-style bedside manner.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - There's no notable nudity.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - There's some brief but graphic footage of open heart
surgery, and one scene where a maniac goes on a shooting spree; no death, or even blood,
results from it. A corpse in the early stages of decay is found hiding in a hospital bed.
PROFANITY 6 - A healthy dosage of foul language and the F-word are employed
throughout. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sex is treated rather casually, and illness, injury and other
spoils of war are illustrated by the patients in the hospital.
MESSAGE - The film is a statement about the importance of human dignity.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
