Steven Spielberg's take on slavery is based on a true
incident: An early 19th century rebellion by Africans on a slave ship leads to a court
case. With Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins and Matthew McConaughey.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Full male frontal nudity, male and female buttocks and female
breasts in some scenes - however, these aren't sexual scenes; they are scenes of bathing
and of naked slaves in the cargo hold of the ship, etc.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - During the rebellion many people are killed and there's a
great deal of blood (people are killed by ax, swords, etc.). People are whipped until
bloody. There are scenes of people being captured and people are thrown overboard to
drown. Several people are shot.
PROFANITY 1 - One mild obscenity. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Slavery, freedom, the American court system, racial
relations.
MESSAGE - Slavery is wrong. Sometimes the end justifies the means.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
