ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Edward James Olmos stars in and directed this Horatio Alger
story gone bad about drugs, prison life and gang wars.
SEX/NUDITY 8 - While there's no nudity, there are graphic scenes of
homosexual rape taking place in prison. There is one lovemaking scene which is intercut
with a homosexual rape/killing.
VIOLENCE/GORE 9 - There's extreme violence, though the worst of it is kept
-- just -- off screen. Some very violent murders - one group murder committed by forced
cocaine overdose, and one man is raped and killed in a particularly unpleasant fashion,
with a large knife through a very sensitive area of the anatomy. The camera doesn't linger
on the worst moments, but the images do come through loud and clear.
PROFANITY 6 - Profanity is heavy and frequent. Lots of instances of the
F-word and other four-letter words. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Homosexuality, rape, organized crime, drug trafficking and
street gangs, are issues which saturate the film.
MESSAGE - The implied message is that through education one may avoid a
wasted life of crime.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
