Martin Scorsese directs this film adaptation of the
eponymous Edith Wharton novel. It's the 1870's, and a New York aristocrat (Daniel
Day-Lewis) is torn between his conservative wife (Winona Ryder) and a nonconformist
Countess (Michelle Pfeiffer).
SEX/NUDITY 2 - There are a few very passionate kissing scenes and innuendo
of sexual impropriety. There is some cleavage evident and some nudes in Baroque style
paintings.
VIOLENCE/GORE 0 - None.
PROFANITY 1 - One very mild curse. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Infidelity, passion, the power of peer pressure and gossip,
jealousy, divorce.
MESSAGE - You'll eventually be happier if you follow your heart, even when
it's going against social convention.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
