|

Jim Carrey, star of the TV show "In Living
Color" plays Ace Ventura, an odd detective who's trying to find a
kidnapped bottle-nosed dolphin which is the team mascot of the Miami
Dolphins. Also with Sean Young, Courteney Cox and Tone Loc. Directed
by Tom Shadyac. [1:37]
SEX/NUDITY 4 - An implied scene of a woman performing oral sex on a man. A
man and woman have sex while many animals watch. There is a lengthy shot of a man's bare
backside, which exposes a glimpse of his private parts. There are also several cleavage
shots.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man threatens another man with a club. A man falls off a
moving car and another man falls off the roof of a high-rise. A man almost becomes fish
food when he falls into a shark tank; shots of large shark teeth may be scary for young
children. A man jumps off his penthouse balcony, and is killed. Several gun shots are
fired at Ace, who catches a bullet in his teeth. A car flips and crashes. There is also a
fist fight between a man and a woman: he slams her head against a pole, and there is some
blood.
PROFANITY 4 - The F-word is not spoken but gestured with the internationally
recognized hand sign. There are also a couple dozen scatological terms, anatomical and
sexual references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Homophobia and gay jokes, jokes about people with mental
illness.
MESSAGE - Don't judge a book by its cover.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
