Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Matthew Lillard and Michael A. Goorjian are best friends
and fellow anarchistic punk rock slackers living in Salt Lake City in 1985. Also with
Annabeth Gish, Devon Sawa, Jennifer Lien, Christopher McDonald, Jason Segel, Summer
Phoenix, James Duval, Til Schweiger, Adam Pascal, Chiara Barzini and Kevin Breznahan. [1:37]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Some sexual innuendo and several kisses. A man pushes a woman
against a wall and they kiss passionately; we later see them moving rhythmically and
moaning but still fully-clothed. We see a clothed woman thrusting on top of a man (his
pants are around his knees and we see the side of his bare buttocks and thigh) and we
briefly see a topless woman kissing and caressing a man (her bare back is visible, and we
later see her holding a shirt in front of her breasts). We see a man in boxer shorts and a
drawing of a topless woman. A man "moons" a few people (we only see the top part
of his bare buttocks).
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - A man punches a mirror and his hand gets very bloody; we
later see a bloodstained cloth wrapped around his hand and then see the very infected
wound (half his hand is black and oozing green goo). Several group fights with lots of
people punching, shoving, and beating each other with sticks. A man kicks and punches a
man repeatedly (his face and mouth gets very bloody), a man slams someone's head into a
wall, a man bites someone's leg and a man slaps another. We hear people struggling, then
see several people restraining a man so he can receive an injection (we see the needle
enter his skin). Lots of people shove each other while slam-dancing in a club. Some
threatening with guns; a few people are shot at but never hit. A man shoots at a car and a
man breaks many car windows with a baseball bat. A man throws something at a mirror and
shatters it. Several scuffles, some involving police officers trying to arrest people.
After two people take hallucinogens, they see a river of blood and a city being destroyed
by an atomic bomb. A man tells another he killed two people and that he saw a family's
body parts lying around after a plane crash. We see what are supposed to be the bloody
tendons and muscles of a leg with white foam on it (it's not attached to a body, it's only
supposed to represent someone's leg). We see a dead man and a sheet-covered corpse.

PROFANITY 10 - About 115 F-words, lots of anatomical and scatological
references, lots of mild obscenities, several insults and many profane finger gestures. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Drug use and addiction, religion, rebellion, punk rockers,
anarchy, generational conflicts, relationships, politics, death of a loved one, being a
non-conformist and being different.
MESSAGE - No matter how different you are, you're not immune to experiencing
normal, everyday situations and feelings; even self-proclaimed non-conformists conform to
something; sometimes your beliefs fail you and you're forced to change your ideology.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
