"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

The Other Sister | 1999 | PG-13 | - 4.1.2

A mentally-retarded woman (Juliette Lewis) struggles to live independently, but her overprotective mother (Diane Keaton) just can't accept she's capable of doing so. Also with Tom Skerritt, Giovanni Ribisi, Poppy Montgomery, Hector Elizondo, Joanna Going and Sarah Paulson. [2:11]

SEX/NUDITY 4 - Lots of sexual innuendo. Kissing. We see a man undress to his boxers and a woman undress to her bra and underwear (it's implied that they then have intercourse). A man and woman look through a book of sexual advice and we briefly see some illustrations of people in sexual positions. We see two women in bed together (they're obviously lovers but we don't see them doing anything sexual). During a "sex talk," we hear some clinical words. A man licks salt from a woman's stomach before drinking a shot. We see a woman wearing a cleavage-revealing bra begin to take it off, but we don't see her bare breasts. A woman shows her bare stomach to a man. We see some condoms and some game pieces that are illustrations of penises.

VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A girl pushes a boy down some steps.

LANGUAGE 2 - Several mild obscenities and insults.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mental retardation, living independently, parenthood, discovering one's sexuality, falling in love, lesbianism.

MESSAGE - You have to let your children grow up and live their own lives.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
