MPAA Rating: R

In this drama directed by John Sayles, a budding romance between a travelling nightclub singer and a man who's still struggling with a past tragedy is tested when they, along with her distant daughter, find themselves forced to survive in the wilderness. With Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, David Strathairn, Vanessa Martinez, Kris Kristofferson, Leo Burmester, Kathryn Grody, Michael Laskin, Casey Siemaszko and Rita Taggart. [2:06]

SEX/NUDITY 3 - A little sexual innuendo and a few passionate kisses. We see a shirtless man and a woman in a robe lying in bed, presumably post-coitus. People take off their wet clothing and we see a girl's bare back, a man in his underwear and a woman in a bra, briefly. A couple of cleavage-revealing tops.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - Several gunshots are heard and it's implied a man has been murdered. Blood drips on a piece of paper, then we see a girl cutting herself with a razor blade (she has three bloody lines of cuts on her inner arm); she also presses a scissor blade underneath her eye but doesn't cut herself. Someone discovers a corpse's hand and wrist underneath some brush. A fish is shot (we see a man point the gun at it, then hear a shot). A few remarks and stories about people killing themselves or dying in accidents.

PROFANITY 7 - About 13 F-words, several anatomical references, many scatological references, lots of mild obscenities and some insults (most are in reference to lesbians). [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Alaskan life, unconventional lifestyles, tragedies, falling in love, failed relationships, strained mother-daughter relationships, self-mutilation, survival, lesbianism.

MESSAGE - None of us can completely cross the line from uncertainty to certainty during the course of our lives, because the future is really one big question mark.
