Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
The animated version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic
play about a stubborn Siamese king and the outspoken English schoolteacher who helps him
learn to rule more compassionately. With the voices of Armi Arabe, David Burnham, Alan
Hong, Christiane Noll, Miranda Richardson, Martin Vidnovic, Adam Wylie, Darryl Hammond,
Ian Richardson and Tracy Venner Warren.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A kiss. We briefly see a man's underwear when his pants fall
down.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A girl falls into a river and a boy jumps in to save her;
they're both rescued by a man. A man shoots a firecracker/rocket at a hot air balloon and
it catches on fire; all but one of the passengers jumps into the water below (they're not
injured). A man crashes to the ground in the damaged hot air balloon and appears to be
dead, but he eventually wakes up and is fine. A dragon breathes fire at people and
destroys the barrel they're hiding behind. A man threatens to whip a girl. A boy punches
several guards and grabs the girl they were holding. An alligator snaps his jaws at a man
and snakes nearly bite some people. All the other incidences of violence are played for
laughs: A boy accidentally shoots a crossbow and nearly hits a man in the head, a boy
knocks a man down, a man is hit in the head with several balls, a ball and chain gets
wrapped around a man's neck, and a machine throws knives around a man's body, pinning him
to the wall. A man falls into water and nearly gets bitten by snapping lobsters. Twice, we
see boys kickboxing; one boy gets his nose a little bloody. In various scenes, a man runs
into a pole and is hit in the mouth, kicked in the face and tripped; each time, he loses a
tooth. Several times a man is pelted with fruit; one time, pieces get stuck in his mouth
and eyes. A man shoves a mirror in a man's mouth and "bops" him on the top of
his head. Twice, a large cat swats a man with its tail. A man swats at a monkey and guards
swing their swords at the monkey. An elephant wraps a man in his trunk then spins him into
a tree; after the man climbs up the tree, the elephant shakes it and large pieces of fruit
fall on the man's head.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
