Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Monica Potter plays an unlucky-at-love, newbie-to-New
Yorker who falls for a man (Freddie Prinze Jr.) who's either her dream come true or the
devil in spiffy clothes. Also with Brendan Beiser, China Chow, Tomiko Fraser, Raoul
Ganeev, Ivana Milicevic, Shalom Harlow and Sara O'Hare. [1:27]
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Several instances of sexual innuendo, including references to
casual sex, male and female genitalia, ménage-à-trois, and homosexuality. A man and
woman have sex in bed; we see the bare back of the woman (while she's straddling and
moving on top of the man) and the man's bare chest. In one scene a dog jumps on a woman,
knocks her down and starts humping her from behind (she's on her hands and knees, so it
creates the brief illusion that they're having sex). A shirtless man and shirtless woman
kiss passionately and then recline to have sex -- we then see them post-coitus; also four
women look on from another apartment and talk about watching the two having sex. The
camera catches two men embracing and evidently kissing; we see one man kiss the other on
the neck. We see the bare necks, backs and shoulders of three topless women; we glimpse
the side of one woman's breast. A woman puts her hand on another woman's clothed breast as
they're lying in bed together; then they hold each other and cuddle. A woman grabs another
woman's clothed behind. Three women squeeze their clothed nipples to make them erect
before going into a party; in another scene women grab their clothed breasts. One woman
looks up another woman's dress and tells her she can see her panties. We see a woman in
her underwear (she's wearing a shirt). There are several references of a perverted uncle
looking lustfully at his young niece and asking her to do things and play games that would
turn him on. Two young elementary school girls are in a single man's apartment and
comments are made about the girls being underage prostitutes. We see a sweaty, shirtless
man working out and girls looking on, lustfully. We see a man in a woman's dress, spanking
his clothed behind while dancing in front of a mirror. A few instances of passionate
kissing. A man ogles a woman and then sticks out his tongue and makes perverse licking
gestures at her. It's implied two women become lovers. Lots of cleavage. Talk about a
woman wearing crotchless panties.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man punches another man in the face, giving him a bloody
lip. A man is punched in the face and tackled. A man blows an inhaler (for asthma) in a
man's eyes. A woman hits a man in the head with a shoe. A man throws knives at two men and
pins their shirts against the wall. Threatening with guns and a few shots fired. We see
the silhouette of a man grabbing a bat and apparently beating a woman to death. In a few
scenes a big, playful dog jumps on a woman and knocks her down. A woman falls down the
stairs. A woman with her eyes covered runs into walls and falls over furniture. A man sits
on the toilet and we hear him make several gross, excremental sounds and he flatulates (a
few women hear and smell this). Excrement shoots up out of a toilet and covers a few women
in a bathroom stall.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
