A
sleepy Southern town wakes up when an eccentric woman (Patricia Neal) commits suicide and
the police investigate it as a murder case. Also with Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, Liv
Tyler, Chris O'Donnell, Charles S. Dutton, Lyle Lovett, Ned Beatty, Courtney B. Vance,
Donald Moffatt, Matt Malloy, Rufus Thomas and Ruby Wilson. Directed by Robert Altman. [1:58]
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A few instances of mild sexual innuendo and four passionate
kisses; during two of the kisses, the man unbuckles the woman's overalls (we see a flash
of her bare stomach and upper thigh) and then they move into another room and shut the
door; sex is implied but we don't see or hear anything. We see a woman's bikini underneath
layers of sheer fabric and a woman is wearing a cleavage-revealing top.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A woman puts a pillow over her face and points a gun into
it; we then hear a gunshot and see feathers from the pillow fly around. We see the corpse
with the pillow covering its face a few times (no blood is visible); we also see some
blood-covered pillows and blankets. A woman cuts her finger on a shard of glass (we see a
little blood). A brief instance of threatening with a gun. A woman tries to grab another's
throat and a man falls onto the floor as he climbs through a window. We see a man gut and
skin a fish and we see a fake head on a platter. A man pretends to stab himself in a stage
play (no blood is used).
PROFANITY 3 - One anatomical reference, some scatological references, lots
of mild obscenities and an insult. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Suicide, dysfunctional families, drunkenness, loyalty.
MESSAGE - Everyone gets what they deserve in the end.
